"Seira" is introduced as the future princess of the Indian Ocean, the successor who will follow in Sara's place. However, there's just one tiny problem... Seira hasn't been born yet. Despite not yet being born, however, Seira is on some level already a self-aware entity, and she appears to Lucia as a spirit that takes the form of a young mermaid.

Seira's story begins when Lucia hears a child's voice in her dreams, calling for help. Following the source of these mysterious pleas, Lucia dreams that she journeys to the ruins of the Indian Ocean kingdom. There she meets the ghost of Sara, surrounded by tiny spheres of light. Sara explains what the mysterious lights are:

The life breath of the Indian Ocean is forming into spheres of light. These are all gathering together... These spheres of light are called "fragments of the heart." They are necessary for Seira to be born, not just as a mermaid, but as a woman. Love, and friendship, and the power of belief are being gathered into the heart of this girl.

Unfortunately, the extraordinary energy of Seira's "fragments of the heart" are coveted by another: a villainous creature named Michel. He attacks the yet-unborn Seira, stealing the fragments of her heart. Now Lucia must pursue Michel and fight to reclaim the fragments of Seira's heart. Lucia carries the Orange Pearl with her everywhere. When she finds another fragment of Seira's heart, it is absorbed inside the Orange Pearl, and Seira learns how to feel an emotion like love, friendship, or belief in another.During most of the second story arc, Seira seems to exist inside of the Orange Pearl. She can appear before Lucia as an insubstantial spirit, usually to offer encouragement when Lucia is feeling down. When Seira is first introduced in chapter 21, she comes across as somewhat of a brat - and she is, even taking into account her age. For example, she taunts Lucia for crying about Kaito. However, as the manga progresses, and as Seira learns more about love and friendship, she matures greatly. Seira may still be just a little girl, but she comes to understand Lucia's feelings on a profound level. Eventually, Seira becomes Lucia's staunchest supporter.
A Ray of Hope
In chapter 28 of the manga, Seira's spirit-form is absorbed into Michel. Within Michel's heart, Seira tastes profound sadness and loneliness for the first time. And yet, buried beneath Michel's rage and hatred, Seira discovers something else - a "crying voice," as she describes it.

SEIRA: I can feel your sadness... I can hear a voice inside of you, crying out to be saved from this sadness! I can hear a tiny voice crying out, a voice that still believes in this world!
MICHEL: That is only your OWN cry that you hear, and nothing more!

Still, Seira refuses to give up. She begs Lucia and Kaito to "save" Michel, and continually pleads with Michel to realize that he is not alone. Finally, however, the climatic moment arrives. Seira confesses that she cares about Michel, and Michel, in turn, realizes that - unbelievably - there is somebody who loves him.

Unfortunately for Michel, this realization seems to come too late.

The Birth of a Princess

As his castle - and his entire dimension - crumbles around him, Michel sets free Seira's spirit-form, and all of the "spheres of light" (that is, fragments of her heart) that he had stolen from her. He tells Seira to leave, and thanks her for her kindness. Although Seira doesn't want to leave Michel's side, Fuku-chan forces her away. Seira and her spheres of light tumble from Michel's realm of the sky down to the Earth below. Then the spheres of light combine together, and Seira is finally, truly born into the world.

But the battle isn't over. Fuku-chan follows Seira and the mermaid princesses down to Earth, and, overwhelming Michel's will, uses the angelic being as a puppet who attempts to hunt down and destroy the princesses and their allies. Even when confronted with an evil, soul-less Michel, however, Seira's heart aches for him. "Michel really truly is a nice person, just like Michal!" Seira tells Lucia. Seira wants nothing more than to save Michel from Fuku; and with Lucia's help, ultimately, the strength of Seira's love for the forlorn angel is enough to do so.

It is telling that when his moment of salvation comes, Michel's final words of farewell are to Seira, and to Seira only. "Believe that we will meet again someday..." Seira weeps tears of mixed joy and grief as Michel leaves her.Seira ultimately proves herself a profoundly kind, gentle, yet strong person. Her experiences sharing Lucia's emotions, and then Michel's emotions, have taught Seira many things about the strength of love, and the pain of loneliness. During the climax of chapter 30, watching Seira's determination to save Michel during the final battle, Coco even comments, "Sara... The little princess of your kingdom has already become a wonderful friend."

Coco

Coco - Mermaid Princess of the South Pacific Ocean and keeper of the yellow pearl. She is incarcerated by the sea monsters for most of the first season, so not much is known about her. In the manga, however, she is a friend of fellow Mermaid Princess Sara. Later, she found to be playful and gentle in the manga, yet brash and outspoken in the anime. Her idol form is Yellow Pearl Voice.

Coco's name could be romanized as either "Koko" or "Coco."

Coco

Coco is the princess of the South Pacific Ocean. Using her Yellow Pearl, she can transform into Yellow Pearl Voice. She can also assume a human form in order to move about on dry land.

Coco has already been captured by Gakuto by the time that the manga begins. She spends the majority of the first story arc asleep within Gakuto's castle.

Coco is a difficult character to understand, especially since she is only active at the very end of the manga. She seems to be a very kind, gentle person with a normally bright, sunny personality. She is often visually associated with yellow daisies. Coco is also very brave, however, and very loyal to her friends - loyal to a fault. And Coco's closest, dearest friend is none other than Sara. When Coco is awoken and freed from Gakuto's castle in chapter 14, she, for some indiscernible reason, decides instead to stay behind with Sara. Perhaps Coco did not want to leave Sara behind. Perhaps Coco had enough faith in the other mermaid princesses to believe that they would come back for her again, and when they did, then she would be able to do something for Sara. Who knows? Coco's motives for willingly staying behind as Gakuto's prisoner are certainly debatable. But when she is awoken again in chapter 19 and realizes that the castle around her is crumbling and that the final battle is occurring, Coco bravely and simply does what she must do. And it is Coco's love, and Coco's song, that ultimately starts Sara back on the path to her true self.

In the second story arc of the manga, Coco has a bit more "screentime," and more of a chance to display her normal, playful personality. It should be noted, however, that in the manga, Coco is a much more gentle person than her rather brash, outspoken anime counterpart. However, like in the anime, Coco still likes to have fun, hang around boys, and occassionally (albeit rarely) displays a sexy, sophisticated side of her personality.

Black Beauty Sisters

Black Beauty Sisters - composed of the red-wearing older sister Sheshe and the blue-wearing younger sister Mimi . Gakuto hires them after the Dark Lovers' failed attempts to capture the Mermaid Princesses. These two have the ability to sing tunes more powerful than the songs the Mermaid Princesses themselves sing, although in the anime and the second arc of the manga, the Princesses manage to get strong enough to overpower them. Though Gakuto turned them back to their original forms (two angler fishes), they were brought back in the second season. Their group name is usually shortened by fans to BBS.

o Many fans think that the name "Black Beauty Sisters" is just a stage name, as Mimi and Sheshe seem to be in love, and sister can mean other things that would apply to the two, such as sharing the same origin. But, in the manga, they are only seen hugging at the worst, never really looking as if about to kiss like shown in the anime.

The Dark Lovers

The Dark Lovers- Gakuto's four female followers who serve him in exchange for his love for them. There are composed of the following:

Izuru- The most mature of the four, she has the power to control waves and marine beasts and has the ability to create dragons from water. She is also the most obsessed with winning the heart of Gakuto.

Eriru- The one with the multiple personality disorder. At one phase, she is cute, and acting as if she were antsy (spinning around and never saying any normal speech). In another phase she can speak correctly and is more observant of her surroundings. In her third phase, when threatened (or when she spins around), she becomes scary, her eyes glow red, and she changes her voice accordingly.

Maria- The one closest to Gakuto in terms of love. She is also very cruel at times, and sometimes seems to see Gakuto more as a boy-toy than a love prospect. She has the power to make and/or manipulate ice and snow.
Yūri- the youngest-looking of the four. She has the ability to control people and objects, especially with the use of her music and, if any, a nearby piano. Although Yūri is loyal to Gakuto, his continued treatment of her as a child leads her to a star-crossed relationship with Hippo, i.e. his human form.

Gakuto

Gakuto - the leader of the sea monsters who is bent on taking over the marine world. He is always depicted drinking wine, and wearing black. His resemblance to Kaito made the latter a subject of initial ire by Rina. He is known in the anime as Gaito. (There is no definite reason for the name change, but one obvious reason is to distinguish him from J-Pop star Gackt, whose name is spelled the same way in katakana. In the Del Rey manga translation, his name is spelled Gackto in order to emphasize the comparison between the character and the singer.)

Caren

Caren - Mermaid Princess of the Antarctic Ocean, keeper of the purple pearl, and twin sister of Noel. In the anime, she first appears as the winner of a beauty contest that the main trio enters; in the manga, she first appears to save them from the Dark Lovers. In the first season, Tarō asks her about his mermaid, and she later blames Rina for Noel's kidnapping. Even after things are straightened out, she chooses to go find Noel alone. She is Noel's polar opposite, having a mysterious personality. While she is cold and distant in the first season, she is found to be wild, humorous, and even a bit sexual in the second. Her idol form is Purple Pearl Voice.

Caren's Powers

In the anime, Caren shouts "Purple Pearl Voice!" to transform. In the manga, she can transform at will with no incantation.

Voice

In her idol form, Caren can use her singing voice to get rid of enemies. Her song is Aurora no Kaze Ni Notte, and in the manga, at the end of her songs, she uses 'Cutie Hot Pitch'. In the anime, she uses 'Love Shower Pitch' with the rest of the mermaids.

Noel

Noel - Mermaid Princess of the Arctic Ocean and keeper of the deep blue pearl. She helped Rina escape from the sea monsters, which led to her capture. She is calm, gentle, caring, and studious (as she sometimes wears glasses on land later in the second season of the anime). Her idol form is Ai-iro (Deep Blue) Pearl Voice.

* In the third volume of the English manga, ai-iro was translated as indigo, but deep blue makes more sense regarding the character's colour scheme; the colours may be based on the rainbow, but Lucia is pink, not red. It is yet to be seen whether this will be corrected.

* Some refer to Noel's name as Noelle, because originally Noel is a male name, while Noelle is the female form, but the official English translation as well as the official Japanese romanization uses Noel.

Madame Taki

Madame Taki- owner of the Pearl Piari. A fairly major character in the anime. Madame Taki is a fairly major character in the anime, who only appears in the manga during a brief cameo in chapter 06 (literally, in only two panels), and then again for a larger role in chapter 32.
In the manga, Madame Taki is a fortune-teller who lives within Lucia's undersea kingdom. However, she is not a mermaid. But she is some sort of sea-creature, despite the fact that she looks very much like a human woman. We have no idea how old Madame Taki is, or how long she has lived. However, we do know that she has been present at the birth of so many mermaid princesses of the North Atlantic kingdom that she can hardly count them anymore. It is Madame Taki's role to view the future of each mermaid princess as she is born. Madame Taki also appears to have been responsible for Lucia's upbringing when she was a baby mermaid.

Nikora

Shiroi Nagisa

Nagisa is a young boy who falls head-over-heels in love with Hanon, despite the fact that she regards him about the same way that she would regard a cockroach that she found crawling in the bathtub. Hanon often declares (to anyone who will listen) that she only has taste for older men, after all. Nagisa is utterly sincere in his attempts to win Hanon's love, although his "romantic" stunts usually backfire, and end up only infuriating Hanon. Still, you have to give the poor boy some credit. He's literally willing to do anything, if he thinks that it will make Hanon like him.

It is not until chapter 25 of the manga, however, when Nagisa literally puts his life on the line in order to protect Hanon, that Hanon finally admits to herself that Nagisa might be "kind of cool." Finally, Hanon begins to see Nagisa more and more as an adult. However, Nagisa panics when he discovers that Hanon was once in love with her teacher, Mitsuki-sensei, and that the teacher even wrote a song just for Hanon. Nagisa eventually discovers that Hanon has received a letter from Mistuki-sensei, her "beloved." Nagisa drags Hanon out to the beach and, as they crouch on the sand in front of the waves, confesses his love to her. Then he immediately looks away and says, "But because I love you, I understand your feelings. You still love that guy who wrote that melody for you, don't you? I don't have any talent like that. My love is just an bother to you, so if you want me to, I'll give up--" Seeing how grown-up Nagisa is, Hanon starts crying. "If you really love me, why don't you try to make me forget about Sensei?" she asks him. It turns out that in Mitsuki's letter, all that he really wrote was words of encouragement to help Hanon move on with her life. Haven't you found someone with eyes only for you yet? Mitsuki wrote in his letter. Hanon confesses all of this to Nagisa, and Nagisa then promises: "I may be just a kid, but Hanon, I swear, I'll become a man that you can be proud of!"

On Christmas Eve, Hanon gives Nagisa a pair of tickets to a concert by Mitsuki-sensei, to be held in Japan next year. She tells Nagisa, "I want to introduce you properly to Sensei, as my boyfriend... I mean, it's already been half a year, and Sensei has become so famous, it'll be embarrassing if I couldn't even manage to get myself a boyfriend in that time..." Nagisa seems embarrassed, but Hanon smiles at him and says, "Don't worry! 'Cause you're the one that I love, you know." Blushing, Nagisa gives her an aqua-colored barette for her hair. As he puts the barret in her hair, Hanon realizes that Nagisa has grown taller than her. Finally, she kisses him.

The final chapters of the manga show Nagisa and Hanon happily hanging out, as boyfriend and girlfriend. Hanon realizes that she will have to leave Nagisa someday and return to the ocean - but she seems to have made peace with this fact. Nagisa, however, does not seem to understand that someday Hanon will leave him. The manga leaves this issue completely unresolved.

Name Notes: "Nagisa" means "beach". "Shiroi" sounds like the Japanese word shiroi ("white"), but is actually written with the characters for "white" and "well" (as in, a drinking well).

Hamasaki

Hamasaki

Hamasaki is a teasing, flirtatious boy whom Rina first bumps into in chapter 15. It's obvious to everyone else that Rina and Hamasaki have mutual crushes on each other, but Rina adamantly denies it, and Hamasaki's flirting drives her up the wall. Hamasaki is a high school student who wears glasses and rides a motorcycle. Other than that, the manga reveals almost nothing else about this mysterious boy, not even his personal name ("Hamasaki" is his surname.)

Hamasaki and Rina at first only run into each other by accident. Hamasaki tries to get Rina to open up to him and tell him what's on her mind, but she remains silent around him. Ultimately, however, it IS Rina who approaches Hamasaki with an invitation to their first date-like outing: watching the fireworks together on the night of a summer festival. However, even as Hamasaki and Rina see each other more and more, Rina still won't tell Hamasaki what's on her mind. Finally, Hamasaki grows frustrated, and confronts her about it. "You won't show me your heart... I know that you're hiding something from me!" he tells her.

Later, Hamasaki takes Rina to Awami Shrine on Christmas Eve, and tells her that he's a descendant of the man who was saved by the legendary mermaid. "It must seem silly for a high school student to still believe in mermaids... But when I look at you, I just can't help but believe." Hamasaki starts to tell her that he loves her, but Rina screams at him tearfully, "STOP!" So instead, the two hug. "Don't say goodbye to me," Hamasaki pleads to Rina. And Rina vows to him, silently, Someday, I'll return to you.

The final chapters of the manga show Hamasaki and Rina happily hanging out as boyfriend and girlfriend. Rina knows that someday she will leave Hamasaki, but she seems to have made peace with that fact. Hamasaki, as well, is more perceptive than he lets on - he seems to understand the reason for Rina's silences, and has also made peace with the fact that she is keeping secrets from him. But still, he is able to love her just the same.

Hamasaki's given name is "Masahiro." The only place this is revealed in the manga is in Hanamori Pink's introductory notes to chapter 25, published in volume 05. "Masahiro" was named after one of the chief editors of Nakayoshi magazine.

Mitsuki Tarou

Mitsuki Tarou | Mitsuki-sensei is the new music teacher at Lucia's school. Because he's so young, he easily becomes friends with his students, especially one Houshou Hanon. Mitsuki-sensei treats Hanon like a close friend, and seems oblivious tosensei, also, has had encounters with a mermaid in the past...

Ultimately, Hanon does the right thing, and gives up on Mitsuki-sensei when she final

the fact that she likes him... She really, really likes him. But Mitsuki-ly accept the fact that he is already in love with another. Mitsuki-sensei seems to finally realize the depth of Hanon's feelings for him, but fortunately, her mature self-restraint saves him from having to outright break her heart. At the end of the first story arc, Mitsuki-sensei leaves Japan to study music in Germany. Although he is apart from Hanon, the two of them keep in touch with letters. What started as a passionate crush on Hanon's part eventually develops in a deep, strong, lifelong (and entirely platonic) friendship between teacher and student.

"Mitsuki" is written with the kanji characters for "ocean" and "moon."

Michal

Michal is a shy, sweet, and very lonely girl, who is the same age as Lucia. She travels the world with her brother, Rihito, a famous orchestra conductor. Because of her poor health and the fact that she moves frequently, Michal rarely makes friends, and spends most of her time isolated at home. Michal loathes her position as a burden on her older brother, and convinces herself that Rihito must hate her for it.

Even so, Michal was generally content with her unhappy life... Until one day, fate cruelly let her taste true happiness for the first time. While living in Hawaii, Michal stumbles upon a shipwrecked boy washed up on a beach. That boy is Doumoto Kaito, and Michal selflessly devotes herself to saving Kaito's life and nursing him back to health. Kaito, in turn, is the first person who treats Michal with kindness, respect, and believe it or not, gratitude. For the first time, Michal feels as if she isn't being a burden on someone. And she is falling in love.

Unfortunately, just as Michal is unaccustomed to happiness in her life, she is also unable to handle the loss of that happiness. When Michal and Rihito return with Kaito to Japan, Kaito's accident-induced amnesia wears off, and he is re-united with the girl that he loves. Kaito gently tries to break the news to Michal, but she reacts with outright hysterics. "Kaito-kun has always been kind to me, but you never once - not ONCE - looked at me as a woman!" she screams at him, tearfully. In response to this, Kaito can only turn away from Michal. "You only love me because I'm here, you only love me because you don't really know me," Kaito tries to tell her. And still Michal won't listen. "You're wrong! For me, Kaito-kun is everything! As long as I have Kaito-kun, I don't need anything else!" Michal even offers herself sexually to Kaito, and when he still turns her down, she tells him, "If I don't have Kaito... There's no meaning left in life."

As time wears on, however, rather than more tearful hysterics, Michal settles for another coping strategy - denial. Even as Kaito spends more time with Lucia, Michal cheerfully cooks for him and hangs onto his arm as if she were his girlfriend. But when Kaito tells her to stop and reminds her that he already has a girlfriend, she holds her hands over her ears and screams, thinking to herself, No more... No more! I want to run away from this terrible world... This is the first time that Michal hears Michel's voice in her head. If you want to run away, a strange voice whispers to her, then come to me...

When Rihito confronts his sister about this latest outburst, she lashes out at him, too. "If I weren't around anymore, you could finally live freely... Everybody only gives me pity... THAT DOESN'T MEAN THAT ANYBODY LOVES ME!" Michal screams, anguished. Seeing her last and only chance for romantic happiness being torn away from her, Michal turns more and more toward the strange new voice in her head, the voice that whispers, I am always with you... When you yearn for it most, I will fulfill your wish...

In Japanese, Michal's name is written as, although a scan from the character design booklet that comes with the second Pure box shows that her name is actually Michal. Michal is a feminine form of "Michael." In the Bible, Michal was the name of King Saul's daughter, who was also King David's first wife. Michal's surname, "Amagi", is written with the characters for "Heaven" and "castle".

Amagi Rihito

Amagi Rihito is an orchestra conductor who travels the world, accompanied by younger sister, Michal. His father was Japanese and his mother was of an unknown nationality, but both apparently died a long time ago. Through his work, however, Rihito is able to provide for himself and his sister.

Rihito is a kind, gentle man who is always thinking of others. He devotes himself entirely to his sister Michal, even to the point where his concern for her sometimes stifles her. Despite his good-natured personality, however, Rihito actually harbors a deep-seated hatred for his father, whom he blames for treating Michal coldly. When Michal is threatened or in danger, Rihito will lash out at those around him. Despite all of this, however, Rihito exhibits an uncommon ability to really see things from another person's point of view. He understands Lucia's pain when she sees Kaito and Michal together, and tells Lucia, "I'll be watching over those two, so don't worry." (This is basically the same as saying, "I'm on your side," as far as the Lucia/Michal/Kaito love triangle is concerned.) Rihito cares deeply about Kaito, too. He views Kaito as a friend and an ally, even as he tries to push Kaito away from Michal - after all, Rihito is just trying to help Kaito and Lucia get back together.

Now, before you think to yourself that it sounds as though Rihito is plotting against his sister, remember this: Rihito KNOWS that Kaito is going to remember Lucia. He KNOWS that Kaito is going to leave Michal eventually. And this, then, puts Rihito in the unenviable position of being the one who is trying to drive Michal and Kaito apart, even as he watches Michal fall in love with Kaito. What Rihito does, he does because he doesn't want Michal to be hurt. Although Michal seems unable to understand this, and the whole affair drives a wedge between the two siblings. Even worse, Rihito's motivations are not entirely free of jealousy. Rihito loves his little sister very much; she, however, seems utterly convinced that Rihito only views her as a burden. No matter what Rihito does, he is unable to get Michal to accept the fact that he loves her. It's no wonder that Rihito grows more and more frustrated and desperate as the manga progresses.

As we find out later in the manga, Rihito's mother was actually of the Panthalassa clan, and Rihito shares her Panthalassa blood. He manifests a number of superhuman powers, including a light that shines from his forehead (just like Kaito), the ability to sense evil, and the ability to drown out the Black Beauty Sisters' evil song with the strength of his orchestral music, as he conducts during a concert. He also inherits a Panthalassa staff from his mother, one which looks very much like the one that Gakuto wielded in the first story arc of the manga. Rihito uses the staff to fight against Michel during the final climactic battle in the manga.

In Japanese, Rihito's name is written as Rihito's surname "Amagi", is written with the characters for "Heaven" and "castle".

Aqua Regina

Aqua Regina is referred to by Nikora (and later, Fuku-chan) as "the Goddess of the Ocean World." Aqua Regina was once a powerful being, but by the time that the manga series begins, she is nothing more than a ghostly specter haunting the ocean. Why? The flickering, ghostly visage of Aqua Regina appears to Lucia in chapter 06, and explains that in the past, when the Panthalassa clan threatened the Earth, she used all of her power in order to seal them within the deep ocean. (In chapter 17, Gakuto himself confirms that this happened tens of thousands of years ago.) Aqua Regina depleted her power in doing so, however, which is why she now exists only as a ghostly spirit.

In order to fully revive Aqua Regina, the seven mermaid princesses must combine together the power of their seven pearls. And reviving Aqua Regina is the only way to stop Gakuto this time around. Gakuto further explains that once the seal upon the Panthalassa is broken once, it can never be repaired again without Aqua Regina's power. And the seal is broken, thanks to Sara.
Until the seven princesses could gather together again, the ghost of Aqua Regina remained protecting the kingdom of the North Pacific Ocean, the last remaining mermaid kingdom, from Gakuto's attacks. In chapter 20, when Aqua Regina is finally called forth by the mermaid princesses again, she repairs the seal on the Panthalassa clan, and sends Gakuto (and Sara, by her own choice) down to the bottom of the ocean. There, she says, "Gakuto's ocean will embrace them both in a peaceful sleep." After that, Aqua Regina vanishes.
In the second story arc of the manga, after Seira is born and the seven mermaid princesses can combine their song once again, Aqua Regina is, yet again, summoned. This time around, however, Aqua Regina does not play much of an active role in the final battle, save to give words of encouragement to the mermaid princesses. She may or may not be responsible for summoning the "ancient ones" that appear to save Michel - the manga leaves that bit unclear. However, it is Aqua Regina who performs the final miracle that returns baby Michal to Rihito.

Hippo

Hippo is simply known as Hippo, and that's that. Personally, I always thought that it was a rather unfortunate name, or perhaps even an allusion to Hippo's, er, pudginess. But the name makes sense once you read chapter 17...

In chapter 17, Hippo's true name, Hippocampus, is revealed. A hippocampus is a creature from Greek mythology with the head, torso, and front legs of a horse, but with a fish tail for the lower part of its body. Poseidon's chariot is said to have been drawn by a hippocampus.

Hippo

Hippo is Lucia's guardian penguin. From the beginning of the manga, he doesn't seem like much of a useful guardian. Hippo is basically used as slave labor around Pearl Waters - he cooks, cleans, does the laundry, and constantly nags at Lucia. He serves only two useful functions. One is that he has the Pearl Radar, which can detect the presence of the pearls of the other mermaid princesses. The other is that he is an important source of knowledge about the mermaid world, and he and Nikora often find themselves lecturing Lucia about things that she should already know.

Hippo is your typical, old-fashioned Loyal Retainer in every sense of the word. He speaks very politely, even when he's angry at Lucia, he is always careful to observe the social distance between himself, a mere servant, and Lucia, a royal princess. Hippo was most likely raised around royalty, and was probably trained to be a servant from the moment of his birth.

Despite all of his self-professed humility, however, Hippo is actually quite full of himself. He considers his penguin body to be quite handsome, and the extreme lack of attractive female penguins in and around Japan is a constant source of misery for him.

Hippo seems to have born beneath an unlucky star, which would explain why in almost every chapter he ends up being punched by Lucia, smacked in the head with a towel, assaulted by other penguins, or thrown across a room by Kaito. Hippo is quite possibly the most unfortunate penguin ever to grace the surface of the Earth (or the floor beneath the ocean, for that matter).

It is only much later in the series that the secrets of Hippo are revealed. First he can assume a human form, and second, he can assume the shape of a mythical Hippocampus. The Hippocampus is Hippo's "true" form, although at the same time, the Hippocampus seems to have a different mind, and a different personality, than the Hippo that we normally know and love. In his simple human form, however, Hippo is still very much the same person that he always is, and he also has the command of substantial magical powers.

Pearl Radar
I don't know if this counts as "magical" or not, but whatever. Hippo uses the Pearl Radar to detect the presence of the pearls of the mermaid princesses. However, he drops the Pearl Radar in chapter 11, and Caren picks it up. Caren loses the Pearl Radar to the Black Beauty Sisters in chapter 13. Finally, in chapter 15, Sara crushes the Pearl Radar with her bare hands.

key to the seal
This was the seahorse-shaped key that Sara used to unlock the seal placed on Gakuto's clan. When the key is "awakened" in chapter 17, it plays a sad, somber melody, and sprouts wings. The awakening of the key allows Hippo to transform into his final form, Hippocampus.

Kaito Dōmoto

Kaito, the son of a pair of musicians, is an avid surfer, as well as Lucia's love interest. Though he is popular with girls, he is secretly in love with a beautiful mermaid who saved him from a shipwreck seven years ago, which killed his parents, and has yet to realize that this mermaid is Lucia. Later in the story, it is discovered that beneath Kaito's human exterior lie some distinctively not human qualities.

Doumoto, Kaito

Kaito is a junior high school student, in the same class as Lucia. He is strong, handsome, a phenomenally talented surfer, and widely workshipped by girls of all ages - and he knows it, too. Kaito's ego, however, may be largely a front that hides his feelings of fear and insecurity. In fact, in chapter 17, Kaito even says that surfing is the only thing that lets him truly feel like himself. His parents, both famous musicians, died when he was young, and he has been living on his own since then. Since Lucia appeared in his life, Kaito has been having frightening dreams, a glowing light sometimes appears on his forehead, and he occasionally exhibits strange powers. Kaito's greatest fear is that he might not actually be human.

Kaito was saved from drowning by a mermaid seven years ago, and he has spent his life searching for that mermaid. Now that he's seen her again, he has become obsessed with his mysterious mermaid. At the same time, however, Kaito has grown increasingly fond of this cute, sweet girl in his class, named Lucia. Now Kaito also fears that his heart will eventually have to choose between Lucia and his beloved mermaid.

As if Kaito didn't have enough problems, between his love life, his mysterious splitting headaches, the bad dreams, and the monsters attacking him, he receives another bad shock in chapter 16. Kaito finds a letter left behind by his parents, written shortly before they both died. The letter reveals that Kaito was never their real son - instead, they found him as a baby, washed up one morning on the beach, wrapped within a mysterious light. Kaito's parents knew from the beginning that he was not a normal child, but they never had the heart to tell him face-to-face.

Kaito is actually one of the two twin princes of the Panthalassa clan. His slightly elder twin brother is none other than Gakuto himself. The seal that Aqua Regina placed on the Panthalassa clan would not even allow the birth of twins, for fear that if the two of them combined their powers, the Panthalassa would once again menace the ocean world. Thus, shortly after twin princes were born, a mysterious force flushed baby Kaito out of the castle, up through the ocean, and onto a beach in Japan.

After Kaito comes to terms with his true identity, and with Lucia's little secret, he is finally able to live happily and confidently, the way that he always wanted to. However, Kaito is still plagued by self-doubt; one of the reasons that he continues surfing, as he confesses to Lucia, is that only when he is riding the waves can he really find himself.

Kaito is always afraid that because of his lineage, he will somehow end up hurting the people that he cares about; and indeed, his worst nightmares come true during the second story arc of the manga. A sweet, shy, lonely girl named Michal falls in love with Kaito; Kaito considers her a true friend, but ultimately has to break her heart and tell her that he loves Lucia instead. When Michal is subsequently consumed (literally) by grief, Kaito is almost overwhelmed by pain and guilt. "The sadness of not understand who - what - you really are... The pain... Realizing that you're an inhuman monster that may never be loved by anyone... Michal suffered the same way that I did back then... I'm the one who should have understood her the most, and I'm the one who caused her to suffer the most!" he cries out, in a burst of self-loathing. Ultimately, however, a sound scolding (and a punch in the face) from Rihito gives Kaito the courage to get back on his feet.

No matter what happens, Kaito will always be there to protect Lucia. Kaito has many personal and emotional burdens to shoulder, but he knows that he can rely on Lucia for support - and he knows that he has to keep smiling for her sake, too. In the end, nothing is capable of keeping Kaito down. His cocky grin, and the mischevious twinkle in his eyes, still manage to shine through, no matter what sort of ordeals he has to endure.

Kaito appears this way, dressed as a prince, when he is pulled into the worlds beneath the ocean surface. Granted, in the image linked above, "prince" Kaito happens to be in mortal peril. But still, it was the best image of his princely attire that I could find.

Kaito's Powers

When Kaito is threatened or in danger, a glowing sigil appears on his forehead. This light has the power to repel whatever threatens him. Later, the light begins to appear when Lucia is in danger as well. In chapter 16, Kaito's light even surrounds Lucia and makes her immune to Maria's attack. However, Kaito's light is always accompanied by headaches, which become more and more paralyzing for Kaito, especially as his light increases in power.

There are instances in the manga when Kaito demonstrates the ability to breathe underwater, most notably during the end of the first story arc, and in chapter 26, when he makes out with Lucia underwater. In chapter 21, Sara tells Lucia, "Kaito cannot die within the ocean," since he is descended from the Panthalassa kings. When Kaito and Lucia first met, Lucia thought that she saved Kaito from drowning, but in chapter 32 of the manga, it is revealed that Kaito actually saved her. Still, the incident nearly killed Kaito, and Lucia still decided to give him her pearl in order to revive his strength anyway.

Magical Items

Rihito inherits a regal, rose-topped rod from his mother, who is of Panthalassa blood. The rod very much resembles the one weilded by Gakuto in the first story arc of the manga. During the climax of the second story arc, Rihito gives the rod to Kaito, and Kaito uses the rod to smash the fossilized remains of the original Michel.

Rina Tōin

Rina Tōin is one of the central characters in the anime and manga Mermaid Melody Pichi Pichi Pitch and its second anime season Mermaid Melody Pichi Pichi Pitch Pure. She is the mermaid princess of the North Atlantic Ocean. She is the keeper of the Green Pearl. Rina is a person who dwells on the past. She seemed to be cold and distant at first glance; but as the series progress, she begins to open up and shows a more friendly and gentle side of her.

Rina is the third mermaid princess to appear in both the anime and the manga. Her idol form is Green Pearl Voice. She has two image songs from both seasons of the anime: Star Jewel and Piece of Love.

Aspects and forms

A mermaid, Rina has to transform into a human in order to stay on land. When she is facing a sea monster, she transforms into her idol form, Green Pearl Voice, and uses her voice as an offense. Her two songs are Star Jewel and Piece of Love, and in the manga, she uses 'Cool Shine Pitch' instead of the 'Love Shower Pitch' she uses in the anime, along with the rest of the mermaids.

Mermaid FormRina was born on a Saturday, thus making her a green mermaid.[7] Her outfit is the same as the rest of the mermaid princesses. She wears the similar shell bra, shell locket, a bracelet around one of her upper arms, and double pearl bracelets around one of her wrists and her tail.

Rina’s princess outfit was first seen in Chapter 14 of the manga. Her outfit is very similar to her regular mermaid outfit. However, some changes are a headband of small, yellow roses, two strings of pearls looped around the base of her tail, and a dress with a cleft and three bows on the side of her tail. Rina appeared in her princess form a second time in Chapter 19; this time her dress is identical to everyone else's - with both bows and the cleft in her skirts aligned in the center of her front side.[8]

Idol Form
When facing enemies, Rina transforms into her idol form, Green Pearl Voice. In her idol form, she sings with the rest of the mermaid princesses and uses her voice as an offense.

Her first outfit consists of a long light green dress, long gloves to her upper arm, and high heeled sandals. Rina, along with Hanon and Lucia, gained her second outfit in episode 28 when the trio was upgraded by the goddess Aqua Regina. Her second outfit is noticeably different from her first one. Her long dress now is complete with double layers and a seaweed green bow on her right side. Her gloves now have a second layer, and the sandals are fancier. She also gains accessories such as a headpiece, a watch, and more fluffs alongside the top of her dress. Rina’s second form is more powerful than the first one; it enables her to defeat the Black Beauty Sisters with her new songs.

Special powers and items

Like the rest of the mermaid princesses, Rina needs her pearl in order to transform into her idol form. Her pearl is also needed in order to summon Aqua Regina. When in her idol form, her voice was transmitted by a microphone like object called the e-pitch, in order to defeat the enemies. She says "love shower pitch" in the anime, but in the manga she says "cool shine pitch."

Hanon Hōshō

Hanon Hōshō is the Mermaid Princess of the South Atlantic Ocean. She is the keeper of the Aquamarine Pearl. Hanon is very feminine and flirty. She loves to shop and apply makeup. Her idol form is 'Mizuiro (Aqua) Pearl Voice'. She has two songs from both seasons of the anime: Ever Blue and Mizuiro no Senritsu.

Hanon, unlike Lucia, came onto land to escape from water demons. They destroyed her kingdom, and the mermaids that had been living in it, fled.

Hanon first meets Lucia at school, in episode 1 of the anime, where they become fast friends. Hanon falls for their music teacher, Tarō Mitsuki. She adoringly refers to him as "Tarō-chan".

Towards the end of the first anime season, it is revealed that Sara once loved Mitsuki in the past. He desperately tries to get Sara to understand the reason he left her. Hanon is very sad, but understands that Mitsuki loves Sara and decides to help Mitsuki tell the truth to Sara.

Later, after Gaito is sealed back in his castle, Mitsuki decides to fly to Germany to study music. Before he leaves, he gives Hanon a composition by him, titled 'Mizuiro no Senritsu' (Water-colored Melody), making Hanon happy as can be. She accidentally leaves the music there, but Shirai Nagisa finds it at the airport. Nagisa quickly falls head over heels in love with Hanon, but she initially dismisses his feelings as something immature. As the series progresses, Hanon eventually reciprocates his crush on her.

Mermaid Form

When in her mermaid form, Hanon has long, wavy, blue hair with two stars in her bangs. She wears an aquamarine clamshell bra, and a bracelet around her upper left arm. On her darker blue tail, and on her wrist, she wears double navy blue pearl bracelets. She wears a shell locket containing her pearl around her neck just as she does in all her forms, and star earrings.

Human Form

Her human form is significantly different from her mermaid form. Hanon's long aqua hair gets short (but stays wavy) and turns darker. She also has brown eyes in her human form. She wears a barette shaped like and 'x' in her bangs, and she is seen in many outfits.

Idol Form

To transform, Hanon chants "Aqua Pearl Voice!" Her idol form consists of a short blue dress, with gloves and boots to match it. The dress is light blue on the top part, and the skirt is sky blue with three layers and ruffles. Her gloves and boots are baby blue with pearl bracelets on her ankles and wrists. She still wears her star barettes and earrings, and her shell necklace. About halfway through the series, Hanon, Lucia, and Rina get new upgrade outfits, making them even more elaborate.

Special Powers and Items

Like the rest of the mermaid princesses, Hanon needs her pearl in order to transform into her idol form. Her pearl is also needed in order to summon Aqua Regina. Lucia Nanami

Lucia Nanami first appeared as a young mermaid seven years ago before the story started. One night when she ventured onto the sea's surface and encountered a cruise ship celebrating a festival, she met a young boy. It was love at first sight. But before anything else happened, a giant wave crashed onto the ship and the boy fell into the icy ocean. Lucia went after the boy without a second thought. She saved the boy using her precious mermaid pearl. The boy kept the mermaid pearl ever since.
Lucia has similar personality in the manga. She was portrayed a bit more childish and fights over little things with Hanon often. She is also very dependent as a human, afraid of the lightning. However, her relationship with Kaito goes a lot deeper, especially in the second season. Mermaid Lucia is also given an even bigger role in the manga, especially in chapter 14 when the trio has to rescue the recently captured Caren, princess of the Arctic Ocean. It was Lucia who believed and played the harp to call Aqua Regina's spirit. In the final volume, it shows that Lucia was destined to become the next Aqua Regina, and has now taken her place.
Lucia's hobby is singing, although she is tone deaf while she is in her human form. Her talent is making beaded things, like the three friendship rings she made in chapter 3 of the manga and episode 3 of the anime. Her favorite subject is said to be home economics, while her least favorite subject is mathematics, or any subject that you have to use your head. Her favorite flower is cosmo, and favorite color is pink. She likes shrimp, but dislikes celery and raisins. She also dislikes monsters and being lectured by Nikora or Hippo. She is good at cooking poundcackes and cookies. Her favorite type of boy is a protective boy.

Mermaid Melody It is an another story all abot a mermaid that fall in love through a boy.
Lucia, Mermaid Princess of the North Pacific Ocean, sets out to land to find the boy she saved from a shipwreck seven years before the beginning of the story, the boy to whom she entrusted her pink pearl. She eventually found the boy: a surfer named Kaito Dōmoto. But as the human form Lucia assumed, a girl named Lucia Nanami, bears very little resemblance to her mermaid form, Kaito cannot recognize her. She cannot tell Kaito who she really is; otherwise, according to mermaid folklore, she would turn into foam. So she tries to convince Kaito into figuring out who she really is (since the legend does not say anything about the other person discovering a mermaid's true identity by himself).

At the same time, Lucia has been told that a group of water creatures or suiyō have invaded the marine world and she must gather the six other Mermaid Princesses and their pearls to bring back the legendary goddess Aqua Regina to stop them. To fulfill this, she joins forces with Hanon and Rina, Mermaid Princesses who came up to dry land, use their pearls, turn into singing idols, and use their voices as an offensive.
